Description

In a hilarious short story from New York Times bestselling author Fredrik Backman, the absurdities of modern life cause one man’s solitary world to spin suddenly, and comically, out of control.

Lucas knows the perfect night entails just three things: video games, wine, and pad thai. Peanuts are a must! Other people? Not so much. Why complicate things when he’s happy alone?

Then one day the apartment board, a vexing trio of authority, rings his doorbell. And Lucas’s solitude takes a startling hike. They demand to see his frying pan. Someone left one next to the recycling room overnight, and instead of removing the errant object, as Lucas suggests, they insist on finding the guilty party. But their plan backfires. Colossally.

Told in Fredrik Backman’s singular witty style with sharply drawn characters and relatable antics, The Answer Is No is a laugh-out-loud portrait of a man struggling to keep to himself in a world that won’t leave him alone.

    A captivating read
Fredrick Backman’s novella ‘The answer is no’ is a cozy little book of sixty-seven pages, and perhaps that’s the reason why I picked up in the first place.Backman is known for writing bittersweet stories with a pinch of humor in them. ‘The answer is no’ is no different. His writing is complex in a way that takes time to seep in, but it does give away a provoking message.’The answer is no’ is a witty and filled with a sense of ordinary life. The book is the coziest I read in a long time. The book feels rather like a play than a storytelling. The narrator presents its characters and describes situations like an orator of a play. Backman’s writing is vivid, and you can almost see the character do their role, and a reader can just watch along the pages and laugh at it.This book is definitely one of my favorites, and I know I can actually understand Backman’s writing expertise. I believe there are books you choose that suit your taste and the other make their way to you and become your absolute favorite. Fredrick Backman is such an author, who’s work came, stayed, and slayed through my mind. A gorgeous book-must read.

searching for a sliver of magic? then read this book
NO! the answer is a big massive YES! 🙌🏻ever since i first picked up a backman in 2019 – thanks to the wonderful ladies at @thebookshopinc – i’ve been hooked. every time a new backman book hits the shelves, it instantly is on the top of my TBR list. simply because reading a backman story is like stepping into the quiet, chaotic vulnerability of his characters. there’s something so deeply relatable about them – like ove & his big, grumpy heart, or the wonderfully complex characters in anxious people. and now, lucas. oh, lucas.the introduction of lucas in this short story was like watching a toddler, so sure of himself, blissfully saying “no!” to the world, in his little bubble, untouched by the chaos outside, he’s content – until the doorbell rings and, ofc, that’s never a good thing (unless it’s book mail, obviously). then, a frying pan, of all things, completely upends his world.this year, my reading list has been dominated by books that made me cry, grapple with grief, but also helped me deal with grief. yet, somehow, in the midst of all this heaviness, “the answer is no” made me laugh more than i ever expected. in just 70 pages, i found myself laughing harder than i have all year. it was like a brief respite – a burst of light in an otherwise heavy year. it reminded me that laughter, even in the smallest doses, is its own form of magic.so trust me when i say this: if you’re anything like me, if you’re searching for even a sliver of magic to bring some light into your life right now then read this book. No, scratch that – “the answer is no” is exactly the kind of magic we all need to end this chaotic year with a tiny bit of wonder and hope. ♥️for me it’s rare to find an author whose work consistently makes you laugh, helps you recognize the small, beautiful moments in life, & makes you cry in a way that feels cathartic. backman is that author for me and my wonderful reading buddy, we’re basically a two-person backman fan club (read cult 😝) at this point, bound together by the sheer joy and beauty of his words and ALSO the internet! ✨🤣lastly a big thank you to the translator elizabeth denoma!

    Not Must but Unique!🩷
I didn’t know I would love the book as much as I did. In a funny plot, Fredrik Backman portrays how humans carry their emotions as a garbage pile and lets it build until there’s no way around or maybe there is?This book so beautifully portrays the human experience juggling thoughts, expectations and emotions in this world which is really focusing just to survive or feel something.Since it’s a short read, I can’t really tell much without a spoiler so going to keep it to myself. One thing if I have to say? Please read this book once. It’s not a must read because I feel a lot of books try to say what this book portrayed, but at the same time the way the plot was built, it’s quite unique and it definitely made me intrigued to read more of Backman’s work!!

Just finished reading The Answer is No by Fredrik Backman, and I’m eager for more! This book had me laughing and reflecting on life. One man’s quest for routine and solitude takes an unexpected turn, thanks to a frying pan. A short but entertaining read that’ll make you think! Another 5 star read.

This is one of my favourite Fredrik Brackman books. In thus short story he creates interesting characters and packs it with a bit of social critique.

  11. Sanja Bosnjakov

Fredrik non si smentisce mai e questa storia breve è un piccolo capolavoro. Il mio scrittore contemporaneo preferito in assoluto!

  12. Dodie

I don’t usually enjoy short stories, but this one was a true delight. An IT work from home man prefers his solitude. He says NO to all invitations or requests. However, he gradually gets involved in the local community (against his better judgment). Is he an angel? some people think so. Funny, gentle story.
